Hepatitis C Facts:What is Hepatitis C? Hepatitis C, often referred to as "The Silent Killer" affects over 2.7 million Americans and 300,000 Canadians. Sadly, only about 30% of these people actually realize that they are victims of this disease. The Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is an infection that affects the liver. It is contracted exactly like the HIV virus, through blood contact. HCV affects each person differently. This is one of the factors that makes it so hard for doctors to come up with a solid cure for the disease. The majority of the time, victims of HCV do not even realize that they are infected. Many people show little or no symptoms. The symptoms can be as simple as minor flu-like symptoms. This leaves the victim thinking that he or she is coming down with something and a few days rest will make it all go away. This is one of the major causes of individuals never getting tested for Hepatitis C . . . they think that they have the flu. What are the Symptoms of Hepatitis C? In many cases, victims of the Hepatitis C Virus do not become ill. Others, however, may experience minor "flu-like" symptoms which do not seem to require medical treatment. When first infected, some people may find that their urine becomes dark and their eyes and/or skin may turn yellow, or what is commonly referred to as Jaundice. Hepatitis symptoms may disappearin a few weeks but this should never mean that the infection has disappeared as well. If you have been experiencing Hepatitis symptoms, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible. A blood test can determine if you have been infected. When liver inflammation lasts more than six months, it is an illness called Chronic Hepatitis C. What are the Symptoms of Chronic Hepatitis C?
